Preparing for your consultation

The initial consultation is a one of the most important stages in making a diagnosis and deciding on future treatment. Medical diagnoses are frequently complex and the health professional would take information from a vast array of sources before offering appropriate advice. Hence it is important that the patients take some time to prepare for such a consultation. For a shoulder problem, it is best to wear appropriate clothing, which allows the consultant to view the shoulder blade during the examination. Also, if you wish to have a chaperone present during the consultation, it is worth mentioning that at the time of booking. You may wish to make notes of the key questions you wish to ask your consultant during the consultation.

It is useful to take the following to the initial consultation-

A referral letter from your physiotherapist, GP or referring doctor, if it hasn’t been sent already.

List of current medications.

Previous X-rays, Scans and any other relevant tests.
